On June 8, 2026, Apple announced a major update to its virtual assistant, Siri. The assistant now features enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities and a new name, Siri AI.
Introduction at WWDC
Apple introduced Siri AI at its Worldwide Developers Conference. Company leaders demonstrated its use for everyday tasks such as finding concert dates, shopping for backpacks, and planning events.
This marks Siri’s most significant update since Apple acquired and integrated the assistant in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Siri AI now offers more direct competition with AI assistants like ChatGPT.
Capabilities and Integration
Mike Rockwell, Apple’s VP of Siri engineering, explained that Siri AI draws information from both device data and the open web to answer queries and complete tasks.
Apple also announced expansive software updates across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, visionOS, and tvOS. Siri AI is now a more capable assistant, capable of finding information and completing various tasks.
Market Trends and Consumer Interest
Despite consumer hesitance towards AI integration, Apple pushes forward with the improvements. Microsoft recently paused AI features for Xbox, while surveys show limited enthusiasm for more AI in apps and devices.
However, AI chatbots remain popular. On launch day, three of the top six apps on Apple’s marketplace were chatbots, including ChatGPT at first place.
Partnership with Google
Siri AI is both a competitor and collaborator with Google’s products. Apple partnered with Google in January to use Google Gemini in powering Siri AI.
Unique Features of Siri AI
Apple executives highlighted Siri AI’s ability to search across device data, including photos and text messages, and to create reminders and calendar events efficiently.
Use cases on Apple’s website included asking Siri AI for travel tips, running advice, and nickname ideas for pets. Available initially in English, Siri AI will later expand to more languages, though not yet in the EU or China due to regulatory concerns.
