The office is spacious, the view spectacular. Add a treadmill desk, and you have the perfect setting for a Hollywood superagent. Ari Emanuel’s rise to prominence began in the mailroom. Tasks included picking up food, copying scripts from various agents, and delivering scripts across Los Angeles twice daily. Despite the challenge, this experience paved the way for his success. He now leads WME Group, representing high-profile clients such as Denzel Washington, Adele, and others. Emanuel also serves as chairman of TKO, owning UFC and WWE.
At 65, Emanuel has authored a memoir titled “Roll the Calls,” showcasing his competitive nature and pursuit of meaningful experiences. Raised near Chicago, his upbringing emphasized self-improvement and meaning. His family, including his civil rights activist mother and doctor father, set high standards. The Emanuel household had two prominent brothers: Rahm, former chief of staff under President Obama, later mayor of Chicago, and Zeke, a renowned bioethicist and oncologist.
Rage and competition have marked his career. Once bullied for dyslexia, he defended himself and others, showing a willingness to confront threats head-on. His love for television and movies inspired his journey as an agent, transforming dreams into reality through negotiating fees, script production, and marketing. Comfortably facing challenges, Emanuel recounts a pivotal moment when he left CAA, confronting legendary agent Mike Ovitz.
Despite discussing themes of anger and competition, Emanuel remains optimistic about the future of show business. He believes storytelling is inherent in human nature and will continue, with AI potentially enhancing it. Although changes may alter writer’s room dynamics, Emanuel welcomes such debates.
Rejecting clichés about legacy, Emanuel focuses on leading a meaningful life. He has accomplished his desires and continues pursuing new opportunities. Not concerned about legacy, he prioritizes meaningful experiences over mere pleasure.
