The Arizona Cardinals are experiencing a challenging start to their training camp. The team’s top four rookies have all sustained injuries, disrupting their plans to rebuild their roster. This setback comes shortly after acquiring new head coach Mike LaFleur and a promising set of draft picks.
Among the affected players is Arizona’s first-round pick, running back Jeremiyah Love. Love, selected third overall, is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. This situation raises concerns about his readiness for the season’s start as he will miss the remainder of the preseason.
The list of injuries continues with Chase Bisontis, the second-round pick at 34th overall, who is facing a season-long absence. LaFleur announced that Bisontis, who suffered an MCL injury to his left knee during a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, requires surgery and will be placed on the Injured Reserve list. This means he will not play at all this season.
“He will be out for a good amount of time, if not the whole year,” LaFleur stated. “Sucks for him. Always think about the player first. Sucks for the Cardinals too. He’s a good player, but more importantly, you hate it for the player.”
The Cardinals’ third-round pick, quarterback Carson Beck, is also facing challenges. Despite a strong preseason debut, where he completed 15 of 19 passes for a touchdown, Beck suffered a rib injury. Unsure of the severity, LaFleur mentioned only that Beck is experiencing soreness, leaving his status for practice and the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys uncertain.
Fourth-round pick Kaleb Proctor has also been sidelined after tearing his meniscus in June. Proctor is now on the preseason Injured Reserve list, ruling him out for the year.
While the situation seems grim, there is some cautious optimism. Both Love and Beck are expected to return at some point. Medical expert Dr. David Chao indicated that Love’s injury is a “mild high ankle sprain” and there is hope for his return by Week 1, though returning too early might aggravate the injury further.
This wave of injuries is not typical, with the Cardinals being the only NFL team dealing with injuries to more than half of their draft picks. It has been a frustrating obstacle for a team trying to rebuild and improve.
