Arizona Helicopter Crew Rescues Man from Flooded Waters
A dramatic rescue unfolded in Arizona as a sheriff’s helicopter crew saved a man stranded on his overturned truck surrounded by floodwaters. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office revealed that its Fox 1 aviation crew responded Tuesday morning to a flooded area in Tonopah.
The man was found atop the overturned truck with fast-moving water surrounding him.
Muddy floodwaters rushed past the vehicle as shown in the video released by authorities.
Due to dangerous conditions, first responders determined that approaching the man directly was too risky. They opted for a hoist rescue to ensure safety.
The rescue operation was swift. A crew member was lowered from the helicopter, securing the stranded man in a rescue harness. Both were then lifted to safety and transported to the riverbank where fire personnel awaited.
Rich Dickner, the helicopter’s pilot, shared with CBS News the urgency of the situation. The water level was rapidly rising, nearly reaching the truck’s windows, prompting a quick action.
Deputy Lindsey Smith was lowered approximately 80 feet from the helicopter toward the truck. She initially struggled to secure her footing but eventually attached herself to the vehicle. The entire rescue operation was completed in less than five minutes.
The sheriff’s office credited the crew’s quick response for successfully bringing the man to safety.
“Thanks to the skill and quick response of our Aviation crew, the subject was safely brought to shore,” the sheriff’s office praised.
The incident highlights the danger posed by flash floods in the region. The Weather Channel reported historic rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Polo, causing the flood in the Desert Southwest.
Maricopa County’s Flood Control District cautioned drivers against crossing flooded roads with a strong message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Fox News Digital is seeking more information from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
