Armed Standoffs Over Migrants Erupt on India’s Longest Border

India and Bangladesh share a border that extends for roughly 2,500 miles. This extensive border has become a focal point for tension between the two nations. Many impoverished Bangladeshis attempt to cross into India unnoticed, often seeking work, while smugglers transport various goods.

The Indian government has started actively deporting those suspected of being Bangladeshi immigrants without proper documentation. The deportation often occurs at night, causing strain in the bilateral relations. The Bangladeshi government claims that India is not following the appropriate repatriation procedures. In response, Bangladesh has intensified its border patrols to curb the flow of people crossing the border back into Indian territory.

In a recent incident, Bangladeshi guards apprehended a man, three women, and a child in the village of Durgapur. This group was found attempting to cross from West Bengal, India, under the cover of darkness. They were spotted by local fishermen early in the morning. The detainees ended up in the buffer zone that separates the two countries.

“Those people were standing at the bank of the river, which is inside Bangladesh,” said Motiar Rahman, a local resident who observed the situation.

Motiar Rahman also witnessed the confrontation between the two countries’ border guards. The Bangladeshi soldiers accused their Indian counterparts of pushing the undocumented individuals across the border onto Bangladeshi soil. None of the detained individuals carried identification documents, complicating their situation further.
