As Armenia prepares for a national election this Sunday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan focuses on potential European Union membership. He also highlights an endorsement from former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Civil Contract party, led by Pashinyan, held a rally in Yerevan on Friday. Attendees gathered to support the Prime Minister’s vision for Armenia’s future relations with the West.
In the strategic South Caucasus region, Armenia finds itself in a geopolitical struggle. Russia and Western nations compete for influence, positioning Armenia at a crossroad. By aligning more closely with the EU and the United States, Armenia faces consequences. Russia responds with economic penalties and veiled threats.
“Tiny Armenia is reaching toward the European Union and the United States, drawing punishing economic penalties from Moscow,” says one analyst, referencing recent actions by Russian authorities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested in a cryptic remark that Armenia could share Ukraine’s plight. This comment hints at potential risks involved in aligning with Western powers.
