Arrests Made After Teen Takeover in New Jersey Shore Town
Authorities in New Jersey arrested several individuals following a large gathering of teenagers in a shore town. The event occurred in Long Branch on Tuesday night, where many young people gathered at Pier Village, a popular oceanfront locale with rentals and hotels.
Concerns arose as reports of fights and other disruptive activities emerged. Videos from the scene depict law enforcement officers with riot shields managing the crowd, and groups of teenagers moving between parked cars as they were escorted away.
Details of the Arrests
Police detained six people on charges related to disorderly conduct. The arrested individuals include a 19-year-old, a 20-year-old woman, and three minors. Another teenager was apprehended for trying to escape law enforcement.
Further arrests may follow due to reports of aggravated assaults and a suspected vehicle theft linked to the incident. Long Branch deployed nearly 140 officers, including 69 local officers and support from surrounding agencies, to handle the situation.
“The City of Long Branch takes these events seriously and will not tolerate conduct that endangers residents, visitors, business owners, or our public safety personnel,” stated Public Safety Director Charles Shirley Jr.
Emergency Measures Taken
In response to the event, city officials enforced an emergency curfew from 8 p.m., clearing the streets by 9:15 p.m. Witnesses noted the scale and impact of the gathering. Local resident Jason DeSantis mentioned that sirens were heard consistently as more people arrived, describing the area as ‘chaotic’ after the event.
DeSantis commented on social media’s role in promoting the gathering, mentioning it as a major student skip day, suggesting greater preparedness might have mitigated the disorder.
This incident comes as the Jersey Shore prepares for increased activity over the Memorial Day weekend, prompting nearby areas like Seaside Heights to coordinate with federal authorities in anticipation of large crowds.
