At Gallaudet University, located in Washington D.C., students often begin their education with varying degrees of proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL). The university, renowned for its focus on deaf and hard-of-hearing education, acknowledges this diversity in language skills among newcomers.
To address this, Gallaudet offers JumpStart, an ASL immersion orientation program designed to support students in improving their sign language abilities. This initiative provides an early opportunity for students to integrate into the community before the official start of the academic year.
Recently, three dozen incoming students participated in JumpStart activities, which included interactive games that enhance language use and comprehension. Such activities not only foster language skills but also build camaraderie among new classmates.
“Bro, why are you saying me?” one student signed during a language game. This illustrates the practical application of ASL, enabling students to engage and connect with one another effectively.
JumpStart continues to play a significant role in aiding students’ transition into university life, equipping them with essential communication tools for their educational journey at Gallaudet.
