On Monday, an Australian federal lawmaker was hit by a car in what appears to be a deliberate attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reported the incident, noting that the authorities detained the driver. Helen Haines, a 65-year-old independent member of parliament, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV. The incident occurred outside her electoral district office in Wangaratta, Victoria.
Albanese stated that the national counterterrorism team, which includes police and intelligence officials, is leading the investigation. “This wasn’t an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear. We don’t know what the motivation is,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The driver, aged 43, was apprehended by a passerby at the scene. According to the police, a knife found within the vehicle was confiscated for investigation. Police are looking into whether the act was intentional. Haines, who has served in Parliament since 2019, is in critical condition at the hospital.
This incident has sparked renewed concern over the safety of Australian politicians. Historically, these public figures have remained accessible, often operating without the presence of security personnel. However, the climate of public incitement against politicians is on the rise. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated in 2025 that threats against parliamentarians had doubled over three years. Data showed over 1,000 threats against politicians in the 2025-2026 financial year, according to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.
Prime Minister Albanese lamented the “unfortunate” effects of a polarizing political atmosphere, which necessitated increased security for politicians. “There has been a rise in temperature and too much shouting,” Albanese observed, highlighting the role social media plays in these tensions.
In Britain, this kind of violence has prompted heightened security for lawmakers. Notable incidents include the murder of Labour lawmaker Jo Cox in 2016 by a far-right extremist, and the stabbing of Conservative David Amess in 2021 by an individual inspired by the Islamic State group. Additionally, former politician Ann Widdecombe was recently found murdered in her home. A man faces charges of murder and terrorism in connection with her death.
