Ballistic Missile Attack on Kyiv by Russia

Early Thursday, Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. Multiple explosions were reported across the city, according to Ukrainian officials.

Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, urged residents to seek shelter as explosions occurred. A witness cited by Reuters confirmed hearing multiple blasts. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia targeted the capital with ballistic missiles.

An image captured during the strike showed an explosion illuminating the sky over the city. Klitschko later reported that several non-residential sites caught fire due to the strikes. There were no immediate casualty reports.

The attack followed a warning by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He indicated that Russia seemed to be preparing for a major assault overnight. Zelenskyy had received information from Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko about a “massive attack.” He emphasized the “high probability” of it occurring overnight.

Zelenskyy noted that effective defense depends significantly on the readiness of Ukraine’s partners to provide air defense missiles. He made this statement after his return from the United States, where he met with President Donald Trump.

Trump had announced at a NATO summit in Turkey that the U.S. would license Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense systems. This information was reported by The Associated Press. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of support from partners, particularly those with Patriot missiles, to help bolster Ukraine’s defense.

“Every partner knows what is needed and fully understands the consequences of delays,” wrote Zelenskyy. His call to action highlights the critical need for international assistance in defense.
