Barbara Keating: A Family’s Closure After 25 Years
Barbara Keating, who was traveling on American Airlines Flight 11, lost her life on September 11 when terrorists hijacked the plane and crashed it into the World Trade Center. The crash killed all aboard and devastated countless families, including Keating’s.
The remains of Barbara Keating were identified last year 25 years after the tragic events of 9/11. Her family will gather in Framingham, Massachusetts for a private ceremony to lay her finally to rest. Paul Keating, Barbara’s son, shared his thoughts as the family prepares to say their final goodbyes. He noted that closure has been long-awaited, emphasizing the importance of this moment for his family.
Barbara was flying home to California after visiting her family when the tragedy unfolded. Her son remembered watching the twin towers collapse from across the water in New Jersey. “Everyone stopped,” he recalled. It was during this moment that he received the heartbreaking news that his mother’s flight was involved.
At the age of 72, Barbara was known for her intelligence, humor, and fortitude. With a large family of five children and 12 grandchildren, she had retired from her leadership role at Big Brothers Big Sisters near Boston. Her final resting place will be beside her husband, marking an end to the family’s long wait.
Efforts to identify victims of the 9/11 tragedy continue, with 40% of the deceased in New York still unidentified. Teams remain committed to searching through collected debris at the World Trade Center site. Keating has expressed gratitude for the dedicated attempts to reconnect families with their loved ones’ remains.
New York City’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Jason Graham, is leading the ongoing efforts. He conveyed the mission as a “sacred commitment” and a promise to identify and return victims to their families. Using advanced forensic DNA techniques, researchers continue to make breakthroughs, including the identification of another victim last month.
