BBC Seeks Court Assistance in Trump Lawsuit
The BBC has turned to a U.S. court for assistance in its defense against a $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. According to documents from a federal court in Florida, the broadcaster is attempting to secure documents and testimonies from Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump, Jr.
The BBC’s lawyer’s claim these family members hold “personal knowledge” and potential records pertinent to Trump’s allegations. The broadcaster has found serving subpoenas challenging due to the trio’s Secret Service protection and security measures.
Donald Trump initiated the lawsuit in December, accusing the BBC of defamation and unfair trade practices. This stems from a 2024 documentary, which he claims misrepresented a January 6, 2021, speech leading up to the Capitol riots in Washington, D.C. Trump argues that the documentary wrongly edited parts of his speech, manipulating its meaning with the intent to sway the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
While the BBC has apologized for any misleading edits, it denies defaming Trump. The court filing indicates that Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump, Jr. were in the Oval Office during the speech revisions. Donald Trump, Jr. reportedly communicated with Trump post-riot.
The BBC has unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Trump to accept subpoenas on behalf of Ivanka and Kushner, or instruct the Secret Service to allow the process. Now, they request the court to permit forwarding subpoenas via email and certified mail. The court has provided Trump’s legal team with a deadline to respond.
Trump’s legal representatives argue that the BBC’s actions aim to distract from its liabilities. They claim the broadcaster seeks to harass Trump, his family, and supporters. A trial is tentatively scheduled for February.
Recently, a U.S. District Judge, Roy Altman, granted Trump a temporary pause on providing details of his business finances as evidence for the lawsuit. This follows his amended complaint that narrows claims of damages to his business and reputation.
