A family in Colorado Springs experienced an unexpected visitor in July when a bear decided to join them for breakfast. The incident unfolded on July 21, as captured by security cameras inside the home, showing the bear browsing through the kitchen.
Nerissa England recounted the event to Storyful, stating that she was getting ready in the morning when she heard a loud noise. Her three children, ages 8, 6, and 3, were upstairs playing, and she assumed the sound might have been a fallen picture. Her curious 8-year-old daughter, Zara Lee, went downstairs to investigate, with her husband accompanying her to get coffee. They discovered a bear enjoying their trash just outside the kitchen door.
The bear had entered through a back door left open for ventilation due to high temperatures.
The bear didn’t just stop at the trash. It reportedly indulged in Flintstones vitamins left on the table and then dragged the trash can outside, rummaging through its contents. Zara Lee and her father managed to scare the bear away by making noise and opening the door.
Nerissa England commented, “We will be keeping the door shut for a while until the local bears get the food they need and go into hibernation!”
This incident is part of a larger trend across the United States where bears have increasingly wandered into homes. A dry winter affected their usual food sources such as plants and berries, driving them towards human food. The search for sustenance has had severe consequences, resulting in record bear deaths as some have been euthanized, run over, shot, or electrocuted due to interactions with people.
