Bill Maher, a comedian known for his insightful commentary, recently criticized certain celebrities during the first night of Rosh Hashanah. Maher addressed comments made by Macklemore and others on the Israel-Gaza conflict, arguing that labeling the conflict as genocide fuels antisemitism worldwide.
During HBO’s ‘Real Time,’ Maher first criticized Democratic Party members critical of Israel in the Israel-Hamas war. He highlighted the moral confusion surrounding Gaza. Maher reminded the audience that Gaza was not part of the original Israel. It was won in a war against Israel, later returned as a peace gesture. Yet, this history often remains untold, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok.

Maher then focused on musician Macklemore, real name Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, who publicly advocated for ‘Free Palestine’ during an Ed Sheeran concert. Macklemore labeled the conflict as genocide, a claim Maher firmly disputed.
Macklemore gained attention for wearing a keffiyeh and promoting ‘Free Palestine’ during his performance. His initiative aimed to bring awareness to Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
In response to Macklemore’s assertions, Maher emphasized that claims of genocide in Gaza are false and easily disprovable. He criticized the Democratic Party for allegedly endorsing such claims.
Maher concluded his segment by connecting the false genocide narrative to the global rise in antisemitism. He stated that if people believe genocide is occurring, it potentially justifies hatred, a sentiment historically linked to antisemitism.
Macklemore’s comments faced criticism from Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia Public Relations, who considered the rapper’s stance on Israel a calculated risk. Mudd explained that taking political positions can alienate audiences, impacting a celebrity’s reputation and career.
Mudd suggested understanding potential consequences when using a platform for political influence.
In defense of Maher’s critique, Mudd advised that public figures, like Macklemore, should tread carefully when addressing political matters, considering the potential backlash and career risks.
