Bill Maher, known for hosting HBO’s “Real Time,” offered a direct message to Democrats who might avoid America’s 250th celebration due to dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump: avoid being petty.
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, which heavily featured American flags, Maher highlighted the importance of consistently embracing patriotism. He stated that quickly reclaiming the flag’s symbolism is challenging when patriotism is often treated dismissively.
Maher expressed these thoughts as the nation anticipates a significant Fourth of July celebration. President Trump plans a major event for the country’s 250th anniversary. However, many Democrats choose not to participate, pointing to their displeasure with Trump. Maher criticized this choice, addressing both political parties.
“You can’t take back the flag in an hour if the rest of the time you treat patriotism as something vaguely embarrassing,” Maher commented.
He acknowledged Trump’s attempts to associate himself with national identity, a tactic common among aspiring authoritarians. Maher urged people not to assist in this effort, suggesting that Democrats’ reluctance to celebrate is misplaced.
Instead, Maher advised Democrats to focus on the nation’s well-being during the upcoming Fourth of July festivities. He emphasized that Trump is not synonymous with America, describing him merely as a temporary employee.
A Reuters/Ipsos survey revealed a stark contrast: 64% of Republicans planned to display an American flag or bunting on July 4, compared to only 27% of Democrats.
In his remarks, Maher encouraged Democrats to join in the festivities, suggesting that avoiding them out of spite is unwise. With America spanning 3.8 million square miles, he assured Democrats of avoiding Trump.
“Go to the party. It’s a big celebration,” Maher urged. “You probably won’t run into him.”
The poll also reinforces that, despite critiques, America remains a destination of choice globally. It enjoys prosperity by international measures and upholds freedoms that allow criticisms of leadership.
Maher concluded with a rallying call. He suggested that withholding patriotism due to discontent with the sitting president ignores the First Amendment’s spirit and contradicts American values.
“The message that most threatens authoritarians isn’t ‘America sucks.’ It’s ‘America is ours too,’” Maher insisted.
As the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary, Maher called on Democrats to move past their disagreements with President Trump. He urged unity in a period where partisan politics increasingly influences personal identities.
“So come on, it’s the Fourth,” Maher said. “Don’t let this year’s Fourth become another excuse for partisan sulking. Let it be an excuse to be really hungover on the fifth.”
