Bipartisan Support for Addressing Cognitive Decline in Congress

Democratic Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is advocating for addressing cognitive decline in Congress, finding support from both liberals and conservatives. She argues that the expectations for members of Congress should be similar to any job where the ability to work is crucial.

In May, Gluesenkamp Perez proposed an amendment to the FY27 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill. This amendment aimed to establish a standard for identifying conduct that reflects poorly on a member’s ability to perform duties due to significant cognitive impairment. Although the amendment failed, her efforts have sparked conversation across party lines.

Daniel Miressi, a Republican candidate in Connecticut, supported her views on social media. An anonymous right-wing account also backed the idea of mandatory cognitive testing for politicians, suggesting it was long overdue.

Some conservatives expressed frustration that such issues were not prioritized by Republicans in swing districts. Meanwhile, Gluesenkamp Perez has consistently highlighted the issue of lawmakers staying in office despite cognitive decline and its impact on public trust.

This debate often refers to cases like the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose declining health raised concerns before her passing in 2023. Despite her proposal’s bipartisan support, it also faced criticism.

Mason Pressler, a school board member, criticized the effort as a tactic for promoting younger candidates aligned with corporate interests. Prominent conservatives argued that the proposal did not address broader fiscal issues, such as entitlement programs affecting future generations.

In 2024, Gluesenkamp Perez publicly called for President Joe Biden to step down due to concerns over his age and health following a debate performance. However, she clarified that her stance is not against older individuals serving in Congress if they remain mentally capable.
