Blue Origin Rocket Explosion: Launch Pad Damage Assessed

Jeff Bezos’ company, Blue Origin, reported that crucial components of their launch pad remain intact after the recent explosion of their New Glenn rocket during testing. This event took place at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and affected NASA’s Artemis moon program.

The explosion occurred during an engine-firing test and destroyed both a lightning tower and the transporter-erector used for rocket handling. CEO Dave Limp shared on X that fuel tanks storing methane, hydrogen, and oxygen are undamaged, along with the water tank and a support tower ready for repair. Rocket components and a nearby booster were also unscathed.

Limp expressed optimism, stating, “We will fly again before the end of this year.” Currently, the cause of the explosion is under investigation.

NASA had recently awarded Blue Origin a substantial contract to launch lunar rovers as part of the Artemis program using New Glenn rockets. Beyond this contract, New Glenn rockets will also transport Blue Moon landers, essential for landing astronauts on the moon in future missions.

NASA targets moon landings as early as 2028, marking the first since 1972’s Apollo 17 mission. Administrator Jared Isaacman assured efforts to restore the launch pad swiftly, emphasizing the importance of progressing the lander development.

Blue Origin’s New Glenn rockets have completed three launches, each named in honor of John Glenn. However, they are outpaced by SpaceX’s larger Starship, which is conducting test flights from Texas. Both the Blue Moon and Starship vehicles are being utilized for NASA’s planned Artemis lunar missions.
