Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket Explosion: A Setback for Jeff Bezos
For several years, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin maintained a relatively low profile, quietly working in the shadow of Elon Musk’s more high-profile SpaceX endeavors. However, in recent months, Blue Origin had been building steam, progressing toward the regular launch of their ambitious New Glenn rocket. This rocket was poised to provide the space industry with significant capacity for carrying satellites and other equipment into orbit.
Recently, NASA expressed trust in New Glenn by assigning it a pivotal role in the Artemis mission, aimed at facilitating a return to the moon. In addition, Amazon had prepared 48 satellites to launch into space, marking their efforts to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink, which aims to provide global internet service.
Unfortunately, at around 9 p.m. on Thursday, during a routine test, the New Glenn rocket exploded on its launchpad. This incident has become a significant hurdle for Blue Origin. Chad Anderson, a startup investor with Space Capital, commented, “This is a big, collective gasp and setback.”
The explosion has not only delayed Blue Origin’s progress but also impacts its partners, such as Amazon and NASA. Meanwhile, SpaceX is advancing toward a much-anticipated initial public offering, which may assess the company’s value at over $1.25 trillion.
If the rocket had exploded mid-air, it might have been deemed a typical test failure. However, the blast caused extensive damage, notably to the launchpad. A substantial steel tower seems to have been obliterated, and concerns persist regarding the state of the hydraulics and fueling systems located beneath the concrete.
