Bob Mackie, a renowned fashion and costume designer celebrated for dressing some of the world’s biggest stars, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. His official Instagram account announced, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.” The statement concluded by highlighting Mackie’s genius and extraordinary designs, noting, “His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
Mackie gained fame for his glittering, theatrical creations that defined the looks of stars like Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner. His career took off after he started designing for Mitzi Gaynor and later became the costume designer for “The Carol Burnett Show,” staying with the show for its entire 11-season run.
Among Mackie’s most famous creations is Cher’s dramatic feathered ensemble at the 1986 Academy Awards. His impressive work earned him nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for “The Cher Show,” and three Academy Award nominations. Mackie had previously commented on Cher’s influence, saying, “Nobody was allowed to even design a halter dress until Cher started wearing them on Sonny & Cher [in the ‘70s], and then all of a sudden they were in everybody’s collection.”
His designs, which often featured sequins, feathers, beads, and a touch of showmanship, made him one of Hollywood’s most recognizable costume designers. Mackie’s work continues to inspire, as younger stars like Sabrina Carpenter have embraced his archival creations. Carpenter had a standout moment at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, wearing a vintage Mackie gown originally crafted for Madonna’s 1991 Academy Awards performance.
Before his passing, Mackie acknowledged the resurgence of interest in his designs among younger performers like Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, and Zendaya, who have shown a new appreciation for his archival creations.
