Bobby Hunt: Remembering an Auburn Football Legend

Bobby Hunt, a versatile former football star for the Auburn Tigers, passed away at the age of 85. The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, which inducted Hunt in 2015, confirmed his death, expressing their condolences to his family and friends in a tribute on Facebook. Details about Hunt’s cause of death have not yet been disclosed.

Hunt showcased his talent early on at Lanett High School in Alabama, playing multiple roles including quarterback and defensive back, as well as punter and punt returner. His athletic prowess carried over to Auburn University, where he continued as a quarterback and safety under the guidance of coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan.

His skills were recognized even by Auburn’s rivals. Legendary Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant once praised Hunt, describing him as “just a great football player.” Hunt’s collegiate success led to his selection by the Dallas Texans in the 11th round of the 1962 American Football League draft.

Transitioning to a professional career, Hunt concentrated on the safety position. He made an immediate impact in the AFL, recording eight interceptions as a rookie and earning first-team All-AFL honors. His team, the Texans, relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1963, becoming the Chiefs.

Hunt was part of the Chiefs’ starting lineup for the first Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers. Later, he joined the Cincinnati Bengals, where he played for two seasons. Over his professional career, Hunt appeared in 112 games and achieved 42 interceptions.

Beyond his playing days, Hunt continued to influence football as an assistant coach with the Buffalo Bills. His contributions to the sport remain significant and fondly remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
