Bobby Jones, born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta, Georgia, stood out as one of the finest amateur golfers in history. By age 14, he reached the third round of the U.S. Amateur, indicating immense potential. He went on to claim 13 major golf championships as an amateur, a record still unmatched.
Fast forward to 2026, young Miles Russell became the youngest player in the U.S. Open field at 17. Competing in a major at that age and making the cut at Shinnecock Hills marked an unforgettable week for him and his family.
Sunday’s final round held a special moment. After his approach shot on the 18th, Russell’s caddie approached the gallery. He removed his caddie bib and handed it, along with Russell’s golf bag, to Russell’s father, Joe. This gesture was Russell’s idea, approved by USGA officials, and offered an extraordinary Father’s Day gift.
“It was pretty cool,” Russell reflected. “Just there walking up 18, that’s when he stepped in. It was a fun Father’s Day gift. Cool since it was my first one. Hopefully it’s something he’ll remember for a long time.”
The young golfer concluded the U.S. Open shooting 3-over in the first two rounds, making the cut by two shots. Saturday’s round was challenging, with a score of 74, yet he finished with an even par in the final round.
Russell qualified for the U.S. Open by progressing through a final qualifying stage in a three-man playoff for two spots. During the qualifier, Charlie Woods, Tiger Woods’ son, served as his caddie. Both Woods and Russell have committed to playing college golf at Florida State.
In 2024, Russell made history by becoming the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history to make a cut in a tournament, finishing T-20.
