The bodies of the four remaining Italian divers missing in the Maldives have been found. They were discovered in a deep underwater cave, according to the Maldives National Defense Force.
Last week, one body was recovered soon after the group of five went missing. The bodies were located inside the Vaavu Atoll cave amid a joint search effort. The operation was aided by experts sent by the Italian government. This marks the conclusion of an international rescue mission that searched deepwater formations for the divers.
The search team faced challenges, and a diver from the Maldives National Defense Forces died from decompression illness during the effort. The missing group was part of a larger expedition consisting of several Italians visiting the Maldives, which is known for its clear waters and dive locations.
The hazardous dive undertaken required special equipment. Many in the expedition chose not to dive and were unharmed. The divers included a marine scientist and her daughter. They failed to return after descending into the caves, which were at a depth of about 50 meters, or 164 feet. A distress call came in around noon Thursday. That evening, a body was found at 196 feet, deeper than planned.
Recovery of the bodies will take place over the coming days through further dives.
