Singer Bonnie Tyler, known for hits like “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has emerged from a medically induced coma a month after suffering cardiac arrest, but remains in a delicate state. Tyler’s team revealed on June 15 through her official website that she is no longer in a coma but continues to receive intensive care at a hospital in Portugal.
“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal. Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time,” the statement read. The team also disclosed the cancellation of any upcoming shows, with hopes to resume performances in the fall.

In May, Tyler was rushed to a hospital in Portugal for emergency intestinal surgery, leading to her being placed in a coma to facilitate healing. Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler gained fame in 1976 with “Lost In France,” later achieving global stardom with songs such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” Throughout the 1990s, she retained popularity in Europe and represented the U.K. in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with “Believe In Me.” Currently on her Jubilee Tour, Tyler reflects on her active career as she celebrates 50 years in the music industry.
“Touring keeps me going. I consider myself a working-class girl, and I’ve never stopped working,” she expressed in January 2025. “I’m proud of my journey from moving my parents to a cottage in Mumbles from the council house where I grew up. It’s an achievement to be wanted by audiences at my age, and I remain energetic.” Despite her songs peaking in the 1980s, they hold enduring relevance, with “Total Eclipse of the Heart” serving as an anthem during eclipses globally.
Tyler is married to Robert Sullivan, a former Olympic judo competitor and real estate developer. Married since July 1973, they share their time between homes in Wales and Portugal.
