Borja Iglesias Faces World Cup Final Amid Political Stance

Spanish goalkeeper Borja Iglesias is preparing for the most significant match of his career— the World Cup final against Argentina. The match will take place at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

If Spain emerges victorious, Iglesias will have the opportunity to shake hands with President Donald Trump following the match. Despite the gesture being a customary honor, Iglesias has publicly expressed his unfavorable opinion of the president. In a conversation with the Spanish media, Iglesias voiced his thoughts candidly on Saturday.

“I don’t want to go to prison,” he remarked about the possibility of shaking Trump’s hand, as reported by All Out Soccer. “I hope to greet him during a joyous moment, that it happens quickly, and I can move past it.”

With a desire to avoid stirring controversy, Iglesias emphasized that people are well aware of his perspective. Though he wishes to act on his beliefs, he admits to being limited in how far he can go.

Iglesias has shown support for pro-Palestinian protesters and voiced criticism of a former Spanish soccer federation official after an inappropriate incident following the FIFA Women’s World Cup. He also noted Trump’s difficulties with those advocating for progress and essential values.

President Trump will attend the World Cup final, having previously participated in the trophy presentation at the FIFA Club World Cup. He also received the FIFA Peace Prize from Gianni Infantino during an event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in December 2025.

Spain will compete against Argentina on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET, with the match available to watch on FOX.
