Boy George Withdraws from West End Show Amid Controversy
Boy George, known for leading the band Culture Club, has stepped down from his role in the West End revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. This decision follows backlash over his AI-assisted pro-Israel song. The 65-year-old was set to play King Herod at the London Palladium for two weeks starting August 3. Other performers like Richard Armitage, Layton Williams, and Julian Clary were also to share this role. Intense criticism and boycott calls pushed his management to remove him from the show.
Controversy Surrounding Boy George
Controversy erupted after Boy George shared an unreleased pop-reggae track called “Od Nirkod (We Will Dance Again)” on social media, with the caption “#Shalom.” The song takes a strong pro-Israel stance on the conflict in Gaza, dismissing international accusations against Israel. Critics argue this stance is insensitive, given the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Backlash
The response to the track was swift and harsh. Fans, activists, and industry figures condemned Boy George’s stance. Martyn Ware, a founder of synth-pop groups The Human League and Heaven 17, expressed disbelief at the song’s content. He criticized Boy George publicly, calling his actions shameful.
Patrick Clanton, a Broadway actor who worked with Boy George on Moulin Rouge! The Musical, also voiced his disapproval. He shared his embarrassment about sharing a stage with Boy George, whom he described as a poor performer.
Artists for Palestine UK criticized the track, claiming it displayed a lack of empathy for Palestinians’ suffering. They accused Boy George of minimizing reported atrocities in Gaza.
Boy George responded to the backlash on his social media, arguing that opinions, including his own, would not change the situation and lamented the loss of friendships over the issue.
About “We Will Dance Again”
The track “Od Nirkod (We Will Dance Again)” is an AI-assisted reggae song. It references the October 7 Hamas attack during the Supernova music festival. Rather than releasing through traditional means, Boy George shared it on social media. The song refutes accusations against Israel and targets musicians and activists supporting Palestinian causes. Lyrics criticize those accusing Israel of genocide and participating in boycotts.
Manager’s Statement
Paul Kemsley, Boy George’s manager, confirmed the singer’s withdrawal from the show. He stated that the decision aimed to protect Boy George and the production from negative publicity. Kemsley noted Boy George has always maintained his personal convictions but emphasized his role in safeguarding interests while respecting all involved.
Is Boy George Jewish?
Boy George, whose real name is George Alan O’Dowd, is not Jewish. Born to an Irish Catholic family in London, he has, however, close ties with the Jewish community and opposes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. His long-standing friendships with Jewish individuals have influenced his stance on boycotting Israeli events.
Future Plans
Richard Armitage will take over Boy George’s scheduled performances in Jesus Christ Superstar, with the show running until September 5, 2026.
