Brandon Johnson’s Connection Between Faith and Politics
Brandon Johnson, prior to becoming the mayor of Chicago, carried the identity of a pastor’s child. This element of his background was highlighted in his recent meeting with Pope Leo XIV, boosting how his spiritual roots align with his progressive political stance. “Who would have thought that a middle school teacher, the son of a pastor, would be in the Vatican, talking to the pope who has his roots in the city of Chicago?” Johnson remarked after exiting the Vatican. Their discussion focused on merging their efforts to defend human rights.
Johnson is among many Chicagoans eager to align with Pope Leo, who gained fame and became one of the city’s renowned figures when he was selected as the 267th pope. Johnson’s connection to the Black church has been a consistent theme of his leadership, influencing his efforts to engage churchgoing Chicagoans in potential re-election plans. Despite opposition from aldermen on his progressive policies, Johnson’s narrative frames these initiatives as defending humanity.
Amid a decline in religious affiliation across America, Johnson and allies suggest a “revival” is necessary, with Leo potentially being pivotal in this effort. Churches are also viewed as vital for bolstering voter turnout. Alderman Jason Ervin, part of the Chicago delegation to Rome, believes Pope Leo’s potential visit to Chicago could catalyze a religious renewal. Johnson echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism about increased religious engagement inspired by Pope Leo’s influence.
Johnson’s religious heritage runs deep; his grandfather pastored in one of the nation’s largest Black Pentecostal movements. His parents later established their church, now led by Johnson’s sister. Although he pursued politics, Johnson often integrates scripture and religious parables into his public speeches, recalling his pastoral roots. Critics argue his speeches often resemble sermons, lacking in the conciliatory tone needed for political unity.
His upbringing as one of ten children, with responsibilities like mediating familial disputes, fortifies his resilience in political debates. During his term, Johnson celebrated passing three city budgets, though he faced setbacks like the 2026 budget engineered against his plans by opponents.
Alderman William Hall and others defending Johnson’s pursuits link his leadership style to a righteous path, despite political backlash. However, his political choices, including his stance on migrant spending and allegiance to the Chicago Teachers Union, drew criticism from figures like pastor-politician Willie Wilson.
The political landscape in Chicago has shifted from its Democratic stronghold roots. Post Richard M. Daley’s tenure, the city witnessed leaders of diverse religious backgrounds. Both Lightfoot and Johnson, despite initial electoral challenges, secured significant support by focusing on Black communities, particularly through church engagement.
Black church membership has seen a significant decline, posing potential challenges for political mobilization in Chicago. Despite this trend, the church remains a potent political organizing force. Recent trends also show a decline in Catholic affiliation, yet a significant rise in new members joining the Catholic Church this Easter, suggesting potential shifts in religious engagement.
William Cavanaugh of DePaul University notes that younger generations may turn back to religion during uncertain times. Pope Leo’s stances on pressing social issues could rekindle church engagement among disenchanted youth. At Lawndale Christian Community Church, where Johnson worships, he regularly receives support from fellow congregants who encourage his spiritual and political journey.
Pastor Jonathan Brooks, who has led Lawndale Christian for six years, highlighted the deep spiritual ties that support Johnson. Brooks shares Johnson’s favored bible verse, Ephesians 6:11, which emphasizes spiritual fortitude, underscoring the importance of community in Johnson’s life.
