Matheus Cunha scored twice as Brazil defeated Haiti 3-0 in the World Cup on Friday. Vinícius Júnior added a goal and provided an assist for Cunha’s first goal in a match held at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia.
Cunha expressed his excitement, stating, “To be at a World Cup, it can be so wonderful. It’s a dream fulfilled.” Haiti, participating for the first time since 1974, became the first team unable to advance in the enlarged 48-team tournament. Brazil needed a win and they delivered.
Brazil’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, was satisfied with the team’s performance. He announced Neymar would return from a calf injury for the next match against Scotland. Neymar, the leading scorer for Brazil with 79 goals, missed the initial matches.
Starting for Manchester United, Cunha impressed fans with his energetic celebrations. His first goal came from a rebound volley, and his second was a powerful shot into the net. Raphinha, another Brazilian forward, experienced an offside call that annulled his initial goal.
The game maintained a lively atmosphere, buoyed by enthusiastic Brazilian supporters and cheerleaders. The Haitian fans showcased their spirit by singing the team’s traditional battle cry. Brazilian chants emphasized their country’s legacy as a five-time World Cup champion and the home of Pelé.
The match progressed with Vinícius making significant contributions. He crafted the pass for Cunha’s decisive second goal. Vinícius later scored himself, sealing the victory. Speaking highly of Neymar, Vinícius said, “He’s a very important player; he’s my idol.”
With this win, Brazil remains level with Morocco in their group, while Scotland trails by one point. Reflecting on their previous draw against Morocco, Vinícius noted the difference, “Everyone was feeling lighter today and the field was also in a better condition.”
Although Haiti exited the tournament, coach Sébastien Migné praised his team’s determination. “What was positive was that we didn’t give up,” he stated. Despite the loss to Brazil, Migné emphasized the experience as valuable, highlighting the gap in performance between the teams.
