On Thursday, John Healey, the defense secretary of Britain, announced his resignation, expressing his concerns about the government’s defense budget. He accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of not allocating sufficient funds for the defense sector, leaving the nation vulnerable during critical times.
Mr. Healey has been a strong supporter of Prime Minister Starmer. However, his letter revealed a stark disagreement. He pointed out that he was recently informed of the Prime Minister’s Defense Investment Plan, which, according to him, does not enhance military funding to the extent he deemed necessary.
“Without a Defense Investment Plan that meets the needs of the moment, I am compelled to make decisions that would reduce the readiness of our Forces and increase the risk to personnel on operations, potentially making the country less safe,” Mr. Healey wrote, sharing his letter publicly.
The Prime Minister’s proposed strategy would reportedly raise military expenditure to 2.68 percent of the gross domestic product by 2030. Mr. Healey criticized this figure, highlighting their previous discussions where they aimed for a 3.5 percent increase.
Mr. Healey further expressed his inability to support a Defense Investment Plan that fell short of providing the necessary resources. This compelled him to resign from his role as Defense Secretary.
