In London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday. His decision comes after facing pressure from his party due to various missteps that have turned voter sentiment against him. Two years ago, Starmer secured a decisive election victory, promising stable leadership and economic growth.
Starmer will continue as the interim prime minister until the Labour Party selects a new leader, with expectations growing that former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham might take the helm. Burnham confirmed on social media his intention to run. His main rival, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, publicly expressed support for Burnham.
Burnham’s recent parliamentary by-election win triggered Starmer’s decision to step down. After nearly a decade outside Parliament as a mayor, Burnham is set to swear in as a lawmaker later on Monday. Only MPs can contend for the party leadership. Streeting’s support for Burnham increases the likelihood of Burnham winning without opposition.
Starmer is the sixth prime minister in a decade to announce an early exit from 10 Downing Street. His announcement comes on the eve of the UK’s tenth anniversary of voting to leave the European Union, a move that continues to impact the nation’s economy and politics.
Amid growing pressure, Starmer acknowledged the need for new leadership to improve the government’s waning fortunes. Despite leading the Labour Party to a sweeping electoral victory in 2024, both his and the party’s popularity have since declined. A new leader is expected within weeks.
Starmer made his announcement outside the official prime minister’s residence, where he first addressed the nation as its leader two years ago. Visibly emotional, he ended his brief statement before a crowd of staff, cabinet ministers, and journalists, acknowledging the feedback from his party regarding his leadership.
“The question my party poses now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general elections,” Starmer stated. “I accept the parliamentary party’s response with grace.”
He also informed King Charles III of his decision. Starmer spent the weekend contemplating his future following Burnham’s by-election victory. If Burnham emerges as the sole candidate, the leadership transition could occur by mid-July.
Starmer struggled to deliver on campaign promises like economic growth, public service repair, and cost-of-living relief. His decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the U.S., despite Mandelson’s controversial connections, drew criticism.
The Labour Party is losing liberal voters to the growing Green Party and faces challenges from Reform UK, an anti-immigration party led by Nigel Farage that leads in national polls.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Starmer’s potential departure, linking it to issues of immigration and renewable energy, notably advocating for North Sea oil exploration.
Internationally, Starmer earned praise for European backing of Ukraine against Russian invasion and efforts to mitigate economic and political turmoil stemming from the Iran conflict. An upcoming NATO summit in Turkey might mark his last international engagement as the UK leader.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commended Starmer’s legacy, acknowledging his significant achievements in a short span.
“It can take many leaders years to become the statesman you have in just two,” she noted on social media. “European and Ukrainian security is stronger thanks to you.”
While many Labour lawmakers back Burnham, some believe Starmer was unfairly treated. London legislator Neil Coyle criticized the “media circus” involved, questioning whether future leaders will face the same pressures.
