Bruce Campbell is breaking away from the conventional Hollywood studio system with his new independent film, “Ernie & Emma.” For decades, Campbell navigated the complexities of studio filmmaking, and one early experience left a lingering negative impression.
“My first studio film experience was frustrating. I was removed from the lead role and the film was drastically changed,” Campbell shared with Fox News Digital. His dissatisfaction prompted a shift toward more independent projects.
Campbell’s decision to independently create “Ernie & Emma” is significant, particularly after revealing his cancer diagnosis in March. Doctors have given him a timeline of five years, yet he remains focused on treatment and continuing his work.
In “Ernie & Emma,” Campbell has taken on the roles of writer, director, producer, and star. His wife, Ida Gearon, also played a significant role in the film’s production, marking a return to the creative freedom he experienced with “The Evil Dead.”
“The ‘Evil Dead’ was the only other film I made free of studio control,” Campbell said. Encouraged by Gearon’s suggestion, they decided to create the film independently.
The decision for creative freedom comes with challenges, especially when filmmakers rely on external funding. “Creative freedom is essential for artists, despite the challenges of financing,” Campbell explained.
“Ernie & Emma” differs from Campbell’s usual horror and action films. It tells the story of Ernie Tyler, a small-town pear salesman. Ernie embarks on a journey through Pear Valley, Oregon, following his wife Emma’s passing. Her list of instructions for scattering her ashes becomes a journey of grief and renewal.
The film was shot in southern Oregon, utilizing the couple’s home state’s landscapes. Shooting close to home allowed Campbell to maintain a comfortable production environment.
“Ida encouraged filming in Oregon so I could enjoy familiar comforts while shooting,” Campbell said. The experience strengthened their relationship, highlighting a shared vision and goal.
After more than three decades together, Campbell and Gearon’s relationship has deepened. “We’ve been together so long we’re family now,” Campbell noted.
“Ernie & Emma” is set for a nationwide screening tour at Alamo Drafthouse locations, building on early success at independent theaters.
