Bryce Harper’s Involvement in Sports Betting Controversy

Bryce Harper, a star player for the Philadelphia Phillies, finds himself entangled in a recent sports betting controversy involving Major League Baseball. The issues stem from a Cameo video he recorded for gambler Terry Thompson in November 2024.

Harper initially stated that he thought he was simply creating a holiday greeting. This video, however, is now central to a lawsuit accusing FanDuel of targeting Thompson, who wagered $18.5 million with sportsbooks, losing $1.5 million on FanDuel alone.

This legal dispute pushes Harper into the controversy surrounding Thompson’s lawsuit against FanDuel and other parties.

Facing public scrutiny, Harper addressed the issue on his Instagram Stories, attempting to separate himself from FanDuel. He clarified, “I joined Cameo to engage with fans through paid personalized videos. What happened here went beyond anything I knew about or approved.”

He explained that the request seemed personal and not business-related, wishing “Terry” a happy Thanksgiving. Harper alleged FanDuel placed their logo on the video and used it for gambling promotion without his consent.

Questions arise from Harper’s defense. While he positioned himself as unaware, the script he read specifically mentioned FanDuel. Harper addressed Thompson by saying he was reaching out because “your host Bryttanni from FanDuel” aimed to make his holiday special.

Such specific references cast doubt over Harper’s claim of ignorance. He asserted he followed the script “in good faith.” However, fans and critics question why he did not inquire further upon seeing a sportsbook’s name.

Regulatory attention is growing, with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board examining FanDuel’s use of celebrity endorsements as targeting tools for bettors. Major League Baseball’s potential disciplinary reaction towards Harper remains uncertain. Although Harper didn’t gamble, the promotional message linking him to a sportsbook could implicate him.

Fox News Digital and OutKick requested comments from FanDuel, the Phillies, and Harper’s representation but have not received an update.

Harper’s involvement appears naive at best. He underestimated the implications of the script, which mentioned a FanDuel host. In accepting a paid assignment without deeper insight, he’s now attempting to manage the fallout.
