In Bangkok, the death toll from a devastating fire at a music bar has climbed to 30, officials reported. The tragedy has left over 70 injured, with 24 individuals in critical condition, as stated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
The Tragic Incident
The fire erupted late Sunday in the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar, located in the northern part of the city. Described as Bangkok’s deadliest fire in 17 years, firefighters took approximately 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. The venue, operating as a brewery or beer hall, could host up to 600 people, though the exact number of patrons present that night remains unknown.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials are investigating the fire’s cause and examining whether the bar adhered to safety regulations. Most fatalities occurred in windowless bathrooms where victims may have sought refuge from the blaze, as explained by police.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered a comprehensive survey of similar venues to assess potential risks. The city plans to enhance law enforcement to improve safety standards.
Mourning and Condolences
On Tuesday, mourners, including former patrons, visited the site, leaving flowers and handwritten messages in Thai and other languages like Korean. These tributes, expressing condolences, were placed along the guardrails encircling the scene of the fire. Debris such as melted instruments and damaged chairs was moved by officials during the ongoing investigation.
Expert Insights
Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, noted potential risk factors at the venue, such as low ceilings and foam decorations lacking flame-retardant treatment. He explained that inadequate air ventilation could have led to the rapid accumulation of toxic smoke, likely contributing to the high casualty rate. The bar was licensed as a restaurant with live music rather than an entertainment venue, exempting it from stringent fire safety rules typically applied to entertainment locations.
