Provo, Utah — BYU’s legacy in developing standout quarterbacks has attracted Bear Bachmeier, who transferred from Stanford before his freshman season. This decision has positively impacted both Bachmeier and the No. 8 Cougars.
Bachmeier recently delivered one of his best performances, just ahead of Saturday’s game against No. 2 Notre Dame. He threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 109 yards, leading the Cougars (5-0) to a 24-10 victory over Iowa State. Bachmeier made history by becoming only the fourth Big 12 quarterback to achieve at least 325 passing yards and 100 rushing yards without facing a sack in a single game.
Bachmeier’s Career Stats
Throughout 19 games with BYU, Bachmeier has passed for over 200 yards nine times and reached the 300-yard mark four times. This season, he has accumulated 1,033 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and a single interception.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake praised Bachmeier’s rapid growth, highlighting “Bear has a great work ethic. I haven’t met anyone else that grows that quickly and matures that quickly, even within the scheme.”
Bachmeier follows in the footsteps of successful quarterbacks like Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall, and Jake Retzlaff, all coached by Aaron Roderick. Roderick’s expertise in enhancing the skills of each quarterback plays a critical role in BYU’s rise as a Top 25 program. He quickly adjusted the offense to suit Bachmeier, boosting his confidence.
Bachmeier acknowledges Roderick’s influence, saying, “He gives me so much confidence and allows me to go out and play free and play my game.”
Roderick utilized advanced offensive strategies with Bachmeier, noting, “We were doing things last year that I normally would have done with a third-year starter. Now this year we’re doing stuff with him that I’ve never done with any quarterback before.”
BYU’s Historical Impact
Bachmeier’s success reflects the foundation laid by former coach LaVell Edwards over his three-decade tenure. BYU earned a reputation as a quarterback factory, producing College Football Hall of Famers like Gifford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, and others, including Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer and current Texas coach Steve Sarkisian.
Bachmeier said, “A big quarterback lineage. Just honored to be a part of that.”
Under Edwards, BYU claimed multiple Western Athletic Conference championships spanning the 1970s to the 1990s, culminating in the school’s sole national championship in 1984. This history aids Sitake and Roderick’s efforts to recruit top quarterbacks.
Recruiting & Strategy
Roderick emphasized that BYU remains an attractive destination for quarterbacks, stating, “BYU has always been a destination spot for quarterbacks. Quarterbacks want to play here and that’s part of it. Our coaching staff has done a good job of putting together an offense that allows quarterbacks to thrive.”
Notre Dame Challenge
On October 9, 2026, Bachmeier showcased his skills, securing a first down as Iowa State’s Brody Miller attempted a tackle in Provo, Utah.
This upcoming match with Notre Dame will mark the first encounter with Bachmeier for many, though DJ McKinney from Colorado has faced him before. McKinney remarked on Bachmeier’s physical playing style, saying, “He’s a big dude…This will be my second time playing him. The first time, I got a feel of how his playing style is. He really likes to run the ball and then take shots.”
