California Black Bear Attack Injures Couple and Kills Dog
A late-night encounter in Northern California turned tragic when a black bear attacked a couple and fatally injured their French bulldog. The dog, Cassie, reportedly tried to defend her owners during the attack, which left them hospitalized.
On September 19, Jeff and Mallory Wilson’s dog barked, prompting Jeff to investigate the backyard of their home in Trinity County. Upon opening the door, a cinnamon-colored black bear emerged and attacked Jeff. His wife, who came outside due to the commotion, also suffered injuries.
“I think the bear was startled by us just as much as we were startled by it,” Wilson later told the news site Redheaded Blackbelt.
During the attack, Cassie intervened to protect Jeff. The bear grabbed her and attempted to run away. The couple managed to scare the bear off and recover their dog. Despite emergency surgery, Cassie died from her injuries two days later.
The couple sustained serious injuries. Jeff had two broken ribs along with bite and claw wounds. Mallory sustained injuries to her head, face, and other areas. Both continue to receive medical care.
Jeff and Mallory run Radio Ranch, a “glamping” retreat in Trinity County. They have experience living in proximity to wildlife and usually take precautions to coexist peacefully. They expressed their disbelief over the unprovoked and rare nature of the incident.
The bear attack led them to cancel reservations at the retreat as they recover. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the case. Officials note that injuries from black bear attacks on humans are rare. They recommend securing food and garbage to avoid attracting bears and suggest fighting back rather than playing dead during an encounter.
A GoFundMe campaign is raising funds for medical bills, veterinary costs, property damages, and recovery expenses. It has collected over $16,000 of its $20,000 target.
This incident is one of several high-profile bear encounters this year, including break-ins in the Lake Tahoe area and separate grizzly bear attacks. Residents are advised to take precautions and secure areas that might attract wildlife.
