California Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Hilton’s Policy Points and Campaign Challenges
Steve Hilton’s Housing and Political Stance
Steve Hilton, Republican candidate for California governor, presented his housing platform amid a town hall with Los Angeles news outlets. He also criticized his Democratic rival, Xavier Becerra, during the event hosted by the Los Angeles Times and LAist.
During his address, Hilton distanced himself from President Trump, acknowledging disagreement on issues like federal funding cuts and federal involvement in state matters. Hilton emphasizes decentralizing power and believes California should keep federal influence minimal.
California’s Political Landscape
California voters are preparing to select a new governor following Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s final term. This election occurs amidst tensions between the state and the Trump administration on topics such as environmental policies and immigration.
Hilton, endorsed by Trump in April, secured his primary position over fellow Republican Chad Bianco. While he maintains support for Trump, he expressed dissent on certain federal policies, stressing his support for states’ rights.
Economic Policies and Housing Solutions
Hilton described California’s cost of living as burdensome. He introduced a plan called “Califordable” to tackle affordability. The plan includes eliminating income taxes for those earning $150,000 or less, reducing regulations on the oil industry, and launching construction of new housing. Hilton proposes creating 10 new cities and capping fees on new homes.
He criticized Democrats for longstanding affordability issues. He advocates building in undeveloped areas to expand housing and reduce costs.
Budget and Spending Plans
Hilton proposes reducing California’s budget to its pre-pandemic size, claiming that budget increases contrasted with population declines. He suggests offsetting tax cuts by ceasing high-speed rail funding, trimming state agencies, and addressing Medicaid fraud, aiming for $25 billion in savings.
He also plans to end state-funded healthcare for undocumented immigrants and scale back air quality and coastal regulation agencies.
Criticism of Xavier Becerra
Hilton challenged Becerra’s record as U.S. Health and Human Services secretary during the town hall. He noted Becerra’s absence and lack of participation in multiple debates, which Hilton deemed necessary for voter awareness.
Despite Becerra’s limited campaign activity, both candidates faced off in a CNN debate. No further debates have been announced.
Environmental Views
Hilton positions himself as environmentally conscious, though critical of some Democratic policies. He proposes practical solutions like planting trees, restoring wetlands, expanding geothermal energy, and increasing domestic oil production to mitigate foreign oil importation.
Hilton opposes offshore wind projects, arguing they would disrupt California’s coastline. His stance aligns with the Trump administration’s policies.
Working with Democrats
When asked how he would collaborate with a Democratic majority, Hilton cited his experience with the United Kingdom’s political dynamics. He professed openness and pragmatism, suggesting bipartisan cooperation to address costs for Californians.
Hilton highlighted potential collaborations with Democrats like Katie Porter, Matt Mahan, and Antonio Villaraigosa on tax and energy policies. He seeks consensus on important state issues.
