California’s Leadership Challenges and Housing Crisis

California is the most populous and innovative state in America, yet it grapples with significant issues, notably an acute housing shortage. This demands dynamic leadership to drive necessary changes. Nevertheless, this year’s election has not delivered strong contenders for the governorship.

As votes continue being counted, the probable candidates for the November election appear to be Xavier Becerra, a former Health and Human Services Secretary under President Joe Biden, who left many colleagues unimpressed; Steve Hilton, a Republican and ex-Fox News host endorsed by President Trump; and Tom Steyer, a billionaire aiming to secure public office by using substantial personal funds and courting various progressive groups.

The underlying question is why such a significant state lacks standout candidates. The electorate plays a crucial role in this dynamic, as communities often end up with the leaders they deserve. Californians recognize the need for change but resist measures necessary to implement it. There is widespread apathy towards the protracted process of counting votes.

Despite the lackluster field of candidates, there is a consensus on the need for more housing. Candidates acknowledge the importance of making construction cheaper and reducing regulatory hurdles. This understanding crosses party lines, including Republicans, moderates, and progressives.

Governor Gavin Newsom shares this consensus but has not succeeded in reviving California’s construction sector. His challenges stem less from incompetence and more from local voters who want housing but cling to policies obstructing its development.

California’s population has declined since Newsom took office, while the national population has grown by approximately 4%. After the 2030 census, California may lose four congressional districts due to residents relocating for affordable housing.
