Calls for Systemic Change at the March on Washington
Attendees at the March on Washington voiced strong opinions about the need for political transformation. Activists advocated for reforms that include rewriting the Constitution to be more inclusive. Sravya, a Washington, D.C. resident, expressed support for such changes and mentioned revising amendments affecting marginalized groups.
The event, titled ‘Defend the Vote,’ marked the 63rd anniversary of the original March on Washington. It was organized by Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. Fox News Digital interviewed attendees on topics like abolishing the Constitution and supporting Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) policies.
Prominent Democratic leaders such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders spoke at the event. They focused on issues related to voting rights and civil rights protections. Sravya also supported systemic reform of the Senate, citing the need to update its structure and leadership.
Darius from Maryland fully endorsed eliminating colonial structures negatively impacting marginalized communities. Abolishing the Senate is among the DSA’s goals, and many attendees backed this idea along with policies linked to DSA-backed candidates like New York City’s Zohran Mamdani.
DSA-supported candidates have been successful in defeating established Democrats in states like Colorado and Pennsylvania. Attendees showed interest in bringing these candidates’ agendas to their hometowns.
Kassandra from Ann Arbor, Michigan, expressed a desire for her state to align with Mamdani’s approaches. She emphasized priorities such as universal health care, union support, and removing financial influences from politics. Her past work with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed highlights her support for unions and human rights.
Esteban, who resides in New Jersey but works in New York City, noted positive changes since Mamdani’s electoral victory. He described the shifts he’s observed as the most significant in a short period, suggesting beneficial impacts.
