A recent court ruling permits cameras in the courtroom for the trial of Tyler Robinson, accused of murdering Charlie Kirk. Criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno discussed this significant development and the defense’s unsuccessful attempts to argue potential jury bias. The preliminary hearing has been postponed until July 6-10, highlighting the national interest in the case and the critical role of media in ensuring transparency.
Tyler Robinson, facing charges for the fatal shooting of Kirk on September 10, 2025, during a Turning Point USA event, has lawyers who are urging a Utah judge to exclude the public from parts of a key hearing. Following a failed bid to remove news cameras, Robinson’s defense seeks to seal particular evidence, such as Discord records, text messages, and video footage of the incident.
The defense team’s motion to limit public exposure to exhibits that might later be deemed inadmissible was disputed by prosecutors for being filed late and lacking specifics. Randolph Rice, a legal analyst, highlighted that the defense’s strategy for sealing parts of the hearing aims to protect the future jury pool from bias by limiting the dissemination of potentially admissible evidence in the preliminary hearing.
Robinson’s defense, led by attorney Kathy Nester, requested a hearing to explore the possibility of sealing certain exhibits and testimonies. Prosecutors, however, maintain they have sufficient probable cause without DNA evidence. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray stated that Robinson confessed to friends and family, and he remains in custody without bail.
A coalition of media outlets, including Fox News Digital, opposes closing parts of the hearing, emphasizing that these proceedings should be public unless there’s a compelling reason otherwise.
