Canada has introduced retaliatory tariffs on a range of American goods, with some reaching as high as 50%. This decision follows a breakdown in negotiations between the two nations. Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the new tariffs, stating, “We will match the U.S.’s tariffs dollar for dollar, rate for rate.” The tariffs are slated to come into effect on September 8.
The Canadian tariffs, set at rates of 15%, 25%, and 50%, target $27.6 billion worth of imports from the U.S. Notably, Canada plans to increase its tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50%, aligning with the U.S.’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Those tariffs will have real consequences for Canadian workers, businesses, and communities across our nation, said Champagne. He emphasized Canada’s need to respond in a proportionate, targeted, and strategic way.
The countertariffs aim to shield Canadian industries affected by the U.S. measures, enabling them to remain competitive in the Canadian market. The list of over 700 items subject to Canadian tariffs includes live fish, frozen fish, cheese, specific apparel, carpets, and steel or aluminum products.
The United States initiated its 50% tariffs last Saturday, impacting over $20 billion of Canadian imports after negotiations stalled late on Friday.
In related news, billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller criticized the U.S. Treasury Department’s buyback expansion plan, arguing it artificially interferes with the bond market. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton remarked that Republicans are “secretly cheering” for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney due to the trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.
