Egypt’s coach Hossam Hassan addressed an incident involving himself and team director Ibrahim Hassan with a police officer in Dallas. The confrontation occurred at the team’s hotel before Egypt’s match against Australia in the FIFA World Cup.
Video footage showed the two men in a disagreement with a Dallas police officer, related to a player attempting to take a photo with a young fan in the hotel lobby. The interaction between Ibrahim Hassan and the officer escalated to a minor physical altercation. Fans had gathered at the hotel, eager for autographs and photos with the players.
Police Statement
The Dallas police explained that they responded to a security request concerning someone lacking event credentials who was trying to gain access. They resolved the issue onsite and spoke with Egyptian representatives to address their concerns.
Through a translator, Hossam Hassan stated that the team accepted an apology from the police. He expressed satisfaction with the security personnel escorting the team and applauded the organization and security measures provided.
No arrests or injuries were reported from the incident. Hossam Hassan’s comments came amid his first public response to the video, which gained traction online.
World Cup Milestone
Hossam Hassan is the first individual to play and coach Egypt at the World Cup. The win over Australia marked Egypt’s debut in the tournament’s knockout rounds, following an unbeaten group stage.
Ibrahim Hassan, who serves as the team’s director, played for Egypt alongside his brother before transitioning to coaching. The confrontation is not the first instance of reported tension between World Cup delegations and U.S. security personnel, often linked to fan interactions.
Security around team hotels has been tight, with delegations under strict protocols from local police and FIFA’s private contractors. Hossam Hassan’s remarks indicated that Egypt’s delegation does not view the Dallas incident as indicative of broader security experiences.
Upcoming Match
Egypt progressed to the round of 16, garnering significant attention at home. They will face Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, in a match scheduled for Tuesday at noon ET in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Argentina narrowly defeated Cape Verde 3-2 with a late goal in extra time to advance.
