Caretakers Step in to Support Rejected Elephant Calf

Robbie Clark, head elephant caretaker at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, witnessed the birth of a remarkable 308-pound Asian elephant calf in February. From that moment, he didn’t leave the zoo for a continuous 29 days. The newborn, named Linh Mai, faced immediate challenges as her mother and grandmother rejected her.

The situation was alarming. Without maternal support, Linh Mai was left to survive alone. The aggressive behavior of her family added to the concerns of the zoo staff. Clark’s dedication and presence were pivotal during this critical time.

Clark, alongside fellow elephant keeper Jason Gue, took on the responsibility of caring for Linh Mai. They provided the necessary emotional and physical support to ensure her well-being. This involved constant monitoring and nurturing, allowing Linh Mai the chance to grow healthy and strong.
