The Carolina Panthers defense faced a significant setback as linebacker Nic Scourton sustained a season-ending ACL injury. This incident occurred on Thursday, marking the first day of the team’s training camp.
Nic Scourton, 21, was a promising former second-round pick. In his rookie season, he demonstrated strong performance with 47 tackles, 37 pressures, 26 hurries, five sacks, and one forced fumble, according to Pro Football Focus.
The circumstances surrounding Scourton’s injury have prompted an investigation by the NFL Players Association. Multiple reports confirm the situation is under examination.
A spokesperson for the Panthers stated that the team is aware of the NFLPA inquiry. They are actively cooperating with the investigation concerning Thursday’s practice session when Nic Scourton incurred the ACL injury, reported Mike Kaye from the Charlotte Observer.
Joe Person from The Athletic confirmed that, according to a union source, the NFLPA will review video footage of Thursday’s practice. The goal is to determine if the Panthers adhered to the no-live contact guidelines during the five-day acclimation period.
The current collective bargaining agreement mandates that no live contact occurs during the first five days of training camp. Players are restricted to running and conditioning during this time.
If found in violation of the no-live contact rule, the Panthers could face penalties from the league. These could include fines for coaches or the team, loss of future organized team activity days, and deductions of future draft picks.
