On Tuesday, CBS News dismissed Scott Pelley, a prominent journalist, due to a conflict surrounding the future of the renowned news program, “60 Minutes.”
Pelley, aged 68, who had been associated with “60 Minutes” and was a former anchor for “CBS Evening News,” had been a part of the network since 1989. During a recent staff meeting, he accused Bari Weiss, the network’s editor in chief, of undermining the integrity of “60 Minutes.” He highlighted the recent dismissal of the program’s leadership team and two on-air correspondents as evidence.
“We have parted ways with Scott Pelley,” stated Nick Bilton, the technology journalist newly appointed as the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” in a memo to the staff on Tuesday night.
CBS News refrained from commenting on the situation. However, a formal letter to Pelley, obtained by The New York Times, indicated that he was “terminated for cause effective immediately,” according to Mr. Bilton.
In a phone interview following his termination, Pelley expressed his long-standing commitment to “60 Minutes.” He shared his experiences, recalling his time covering conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine, despite the personal risks involved.
