President Trump actively engaged in Colombia’s presidential election by endorsing right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella. This endorsement echoes his tendency to influence foreign elections during his second presidential term.
Through a post on Truth Social, Trump applauded De La Espriella’s advancement to the election’s second round. The candidate will face off against Iván Cepeda, from the party led by the current left-wing president, Gustavo Petro. Trump emphasized the election’s significance for Colombia’s future and its relationship with the United States. He praised De La Espriella, also known as ‘El Tigre’, for his achievements and unwavering political support. Trump declared, “It is my Honor to give Abelardo my Complete and Total Endorsement.”
The support from leaders like Trump has contributed to a right-wing momentum in Latin America. Trump depicted De La Espriella’s opponent, Iván Cepeda, as a “Radical Left Marxist.” Cepeda’s campaign has yet to comment.
In response to Trump’s endorsement, De La Espriella expressed gratitude and pledged to strengthen U.S.-Colombia ties. He stated, “The United States is crucial in combating crime, narcoterrorism, and freeing Colombia from violence.” His remarks were made during an interview with a Colombian news outlet.
