Celebrities Launch Campaign Opposing Trump on America’s 250th Anniversary
A group of affluent Hollywood celebrities and activists launched a campaign to mark the 250th anniversary of America. They produced a video urging Americans to oppose President Donald Trump’s administration.
The video debuted on Variety. It featured numerous celebrities, including Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow. Over nearly ten minutes, these celebrities recite excerpts from Timothy Snyder’s 2017 book, “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.” Author and historian Snyder highlights the upcoming midterm elections as a crucial point for the country. He suggests voters will either steer towards positive change or face worsening circumstances.
“Today, the Republic is 250 years old. Strange though it is for me, this book has been along with the Republic for the last 10 years. I wrote it in November of 2016,” Snyder said in the clip. He adds, “As I look ahead to this coming November, I see a turning point for our Republic. A time when things could turn very well, or they could turn very ill indeed.”
Celebrities read lines from the book on how nations succumb to tyranny. Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Holland Taylor urged, “Do not obey in advance.” Isabel Allende and Lisa Rinna delivered the warning, “Beware of the one-party state.”
Mark Ruffalo, known for his role in Marvel’s “Avengers,” spoke about his involvement with Variety. As a critic of the Trump administration, he hopes to see a shift from a government favoring the wealthy to one that prioritizes young people’s needs and dreams. Ruffalo expressed the need to move toward America’s potential, leaving behind past mistakes and cruelty.
In the video, Ruffalo also emphasized closing the wealth gap and respecting the planet. He advocated for abandoning “colonial mindset” and embracing Indigenous wisdom, respect, and circular economies.
Snyder shared the video on his Substack, captioned, “To celebrate a rebellion is to know that, from a flawed world, we can make new things. We can hold on, we can find each other, and not just imagine but create a much better America. It is a special 250th – it is ours.” He criticized the official anniversary celebrations, claiming today’s leaders pose a “threat to liberty.”
Snyder mentioned these leaders embody threats mentioned by the founders, including arbitrary rule, indifference to law, and wealth accumulation. He named participants like Isabel Allende, Judd Apatow, Joan Baez, Misha Collins, Ted Danson, and others.
