The anticipated return of Serena and Venus Williams to competitive tennis as a doubles team has come to an abrupt end. Competing in their first Grand Slam doubles together in nearly four years, they were forced to withdraw from the Wimbledon tournament. Serena, 44, suffered a knee injury earlier in the week during a three-set singles match, leading to the decision to pull out from doubles.
Serena expressed her disappointment through her Instagram account, stating, “I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.” She shared images of four syringes, depicting the fluid drained from her knee after her singles match. Additionally, she posted a video showing her walking with a strap around her right leg, assisted by one of her daughters holding a cane.
Despite this setback, Serena hinted at the possibility of future participation, suggesting fans should “stay tuned to a city near you.” The Williams sisters were scheduled to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in doubles, but the match was postponed to allow more time for Serena’s recovery.
In her singles return, Serena was defeated by 20-year-old Maya Joint of Australia, with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
The Williams sisters have a decorated history at Wimbledon, being six-time champions in women’s doubles. This marked their first partnership at Wimbledon since 2016 and their first team-up since their early exit at the 2022 U.S. Open.
The duo boasts an impressive record in tennis, with 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals as partners, remaining undefeated in finals. Their legacy as one of the sport’s most successful partnerships continues to inspire.
