The Pittsburgh Steelers are experiencing a challenging start to the season following the departure of Mike Tomlin. Although they secured an easy win against the Atlanta Falcons in the season opener, their performance in the second week was disappointing. The team’s 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots highlighted significant struggles.
The Steelers amassed only 235 yards of total offense in the game. Jaylen Warren was the sole skill player to exceed 44 yards, emphasizing the team’s inability to advance. The offense’s lackluster performance led to a passionate critique from former coach Mike Tomlin on NBC’s “Football Night in America.”
“From my perspective, they don’t have a place to hang their hat,” Tomlin remarked. “They haven’t established the run, they’re not performing well on third down… and to make matters worse, they’re not getting yards in chunks. Sometimes when you get yards in chunks, it can cover up some other inadequacies. They can’t solve all their problems, but they better solve at least one of these problems — and really soon.”
Aaron Rodgers, the team’s quarterback, also voiced his concerns about the offensive struggles. He expressed dissatisfaction with head coach Mike McCarthy’s play-calling, indicating it didn’t set the team up for success.
“In a game like today where there wasn’t a lot of flow to it, we need to be better — and it starts with me,” Rodgers said. “[I need to ensure] Mike knows what’s working, what’s not working, our coaches know, and so we can call stuff that has a better chance [to win].”
Last year, the team faced multiple injuries during Tomlin’s final season, yet they maintained a more effective offense statistically. Tomlin’s squad averaged 316.9 yards and 23.4 points per game. This season, under McCarthy, the Steelers have averaged only 249.5 yards and 11.5 points per game in the first two matches.
