Jeremy Wright, based in Austin, Texas, faced an unexpected challenge when trying to fulfill his wife Sarah’s Christmas wish last year. Sarah had longed to attend the World Cup, which was scheduled for September 2025, eliminating the need for any other gifts. Jeremy admitted to Newsweek that he was initially “unaware” of the official FIFA ticket purchasing process and decided to explore options online.
While searching, he encountered StubHub—a platform where numerous fans sought tickets they couldn’t secure through official channels. Jeremy proceeded to invest $1,158 in two tickets for a Dallas game, with the surprise revealed to Sarah during Christmas. Her excitement escalated when she learned they would watch Japan face the Netherlands, a team linked to her Dutch heritage.
The couple drove for eight hours from Austin to Dallas the night before and spent an additional $800 on a hotel room. Sarah equipped herself with a Netherlands soccer scarf and other fanfare. However, their enthusiasm quickly waned on the morning of the game. Jeremy received an email from StubHub indicating their tickets were no longer available.
Jeremy later learned about StubHub’s operational factors, particularly its promise under the “FanProtect 100% Guarantee.” This guarantee claims to provide on-time delivery of valid tickets or replacement tickets at no extra cost if issues arise. Despite the tight timeline and incurred expenses, the Wrights hoped for replacement tickets. Unfortunately, constant app-refreshing still showed no alternatives. Tickets observed online had escalated to prices between $2,200 and $3,500.
Ultimately, Jeremy requested a refund. The couple contemplated purchasing new tickets, but couldn’t justify the substantial expense. “Considered watching the game at nearby bars,” Jeremy added. “Yet, the thought was too disheartening—so we drove home without attending.”
The ticket fiasco remains a source of significant frustration. “Had there been more time, I could have opted for a different game in Houston,” Sarah explained.
Jeremy added his perspective. “If ticket sellers were required to transfer purchases promptly to third parties, this might prevent complications.”
Shared experiences on social media led Jeremy to realize he wasn’t alone. Fellow StubHub users recounted similar predicaments. Mark Cooley purchased tickets to watch the USA play Turkey in November—only to learn after Paraguay’s win that his tickets wouldn’t be delivered, instead receiving a refund option. Majid Lagzian acquired four Germany vs. Ivory Coast tickets a day after the World Cup draw. By June 13, he learned replacements weren’t available, only refunds. Glen Albuja’s situation mirrored Majid’s, involving an Ecuador vs. Germany match with problematic delivery and mere refund offers.
Responding to user experiences, StubHub stated to Newsweek: “Attending the World Cup demands noteworthy investments. Addressing fans’ concerns is a priority, including confronting technology issues and navigating organizer restrictions.” They emphasized StubHub’s commitment to customer choice and protection, using the FanProtect Guarantee to safeguard purchases.
Following the Wrights’ experience, StubHub apologized, offering them tickets to the World Cup semifinal in Dallas on July 14 with added perks. Cooley, Lagzian, and Albuja also received replacement tickets. StubHub encourages affected individuals to seek specialized support.
StubHub identified the organizer’s app infrastructure as the main issue, citing delays, transfers, and access complications across various resale platforms—not limited to StubHub. The company aims to assist fans confronting ticketing challenges.
