The Chicago Bears received unexpectedly positive news regarding Caleb Williams’ hamstring injury, but the franchise quarterback will still miss playing time. Fans shouldn’t expect the usual backup, Tyson Bagent, for the Week 3 game. According to NFL Network, Bagent is currently in the NFL’s concussion protocol, raising doubts about his availability for the upcoming Monday Night Football match against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Williams hasn’t been entirely ruled out by head coach Ben Johnson, but considering his likely absence and Bagent’s uncertain status in the protocol, the Bears may need to resort to their third-string quarterback. Case Keenum, a veteran, might make his first NFL start since 2023.
“He’s right now working through every avenue that he’s got available to get back on track here,” Johnson told reporters when discussing Williams’ recovery.
Bagent played briefly during the Bears’ home opener against the Minnesota Vikings, entering the game after Williams’ injury. The match ended in a 9-3 loss, and Bagent was sacked on the final play while attempting a potential game-winning touchdown throw.
It’s unclear when Bagent suffered his concussion; it may have occurred during the last play when he hit the ground hard following Dallas Turner’s sack. Despite being undrafted, Bagent showcased his abilities in his rookie season in 2023, achieving a 2-2 record in starts. Williams, who was selected first overall in 2024, has been the full-time starter for the past two years without missing a game.
Johnson referred to Williams as “week-to-week” ahead of the Bears’ primetime matchup against the Eagles, suggesting some flexibility in recovery.
Keenum, meanwhile, has 66 starts in 80 career games but hasn’t played in regular-season NFL action since 2023 while he was with the Houston Texans. That year, he went 1-1 in his two starts. If Keenum plays, the Bears will be the eighth team in his NFL career.
Bagent ended Sunday’s loss with 54 yards passing after completing 5 of 9 attempts. His preparation for the upcoming game is uncertain as he navigates protocol stages.
