Chicago Child Fatally Stabbed: Mayor and Community Mourn Tragedy
On a tragic Saturday morning, a 7-year-old girl named Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon was fatally stabbed while walking with her family on Chicago’s South Side. The incident occurred around 11:55 a.m. in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department (CPD), an adult woman approached the child with a sharp object and stabbed her multiple times in the back.
The young girl was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Local bystanders detained the suspect until the police arrived. During this, the suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. She remains in police custody.
The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds, classifying the manner of death as homicide. The attack, described by the police as apparently unprovoked, has deeply shocked the local community and city leaders.
City’s Response and Community Grief
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his sorrow in a statement posted on social media platform X, where he emphasized that no family should endure such a loss. “I am heartbroken by the killing of a 7-year-old Chicago girl who was simply walking down the street with her family,” Johnson said. He assured continued support for the victim’s family and promised to seek justice.
Security footage reviewed by ABC7 Chicago displayed the child walking with a woman just before the attack. Additional footage showed bystanders intervening to subdue the suspect. Witnesses shared their shock and grief over the incident.
“The poor baby had nothing to do with what was going on,” a resident stated. Many expressed difficulty in understanding how such an incident could happen to a child.
Denesta Freeman voiced her concern, “I just don’t know what this world is coming to… for a seven-year-old like that to be getting stabbed.” Another woman related through her personal experience, saying the tragedy felt close to home since her daughter is the same age as the victim.
On-Going Investigation
The authorities have not released details about the suspect, any charges, or a possible motive. The case is currently being investigated by CPD’s Area Two detectives.
City officials urge the community to support Chacon’s family as they cope with their loss. Family members gathered outside the hospital, mourning the young girl’s death.
